Kathmandu and the surrounding
cities of Patan, Bhaktapur and Thamel are spattered with colorful market places
selling a range of exotic curios and sovenirs. Nepal offers typical ethnic
items such as : - Thanka
(Pauba, Mandala) orginate from Tibetan and Bhuddism.
- Oil and water color painting (astract/ natural
scene ethnic groups). -
Carpet. - Handicraft :
wood, metal,bronze, prayer wheel, singing bowl, bell, belt etc.
- Dolls and puppets: Lakhe, mask, puppet or doll
with traditional dress, jyapoo dress doll etc.
- Rice paper print: Balck and white colour,
calender etc. - Nepalese
clothes: Bhadgaule topi, Hakupatasi, Dhaka clothes, Daura-surawal, woolen
sweater, caps, gloves made from wool of sheep and pashmina.
- Bags and purse: Local cobbler made bags, bags
made from cotton clothes, wool, taili (clothes money bag of 14 th century).
- Images and Idols: Special Buddhist icons and
sulputure. Bronze image can found in Patan whereas wooden image are found in
Bhaktapur. - Gems and
Jewelleries: Resources of diffrent gems, tourmline, garnet, aquamarine etc.
- Nepalese musical instruments: More than 80
types of musical instrument are avialable, sarangi, tunguna, ektara, vasuri,
murali, dhol, jyali, madal, danaha, karnal, khin, dhime, dhampu etc.
- Emroydari: flag, Mt. Everest, rhondendron,
cross kukuri, sari with embroydari.
- Kukuri: Bhujpur etc.
- Karuwa: Palpa.
- Stamps/ coins.
- Silver and handmade jewellery.
Government has imposed restriction on the export
and buy CITIES list of plant, animals and species.
There are government restrictions that visitors should be aware of before
purchasing items to take home. Antiques are not permitted to be taken out of the
country. Hence inspection by the Department of Archeology is required for export
of antiques. To be on the safe side, visitors should have all material examined
by the Department of Archeology and obtain a certificate from the office before
leaving Nepal
